About Ahavat Olam banner Ahavat Olam Home

Ahavat Olam is a progressive synagogue in Vancouver, BC that welcomes Jews of all backgrounds, affiliations and orientations. We strive for a compassionate and meaningful interpretation of our religious tradition, and share a strong commitment to tikkun olam - repair of the world and personal spiritual transformation. Our values are reflected in our active initiatives to support peace in the Middle East, full participation of gays and lesbians in all areas of religious life, inter-spiritual dialogue, and nurturing our own spiritual growth.

Ahavat Olam holds Shabbat and holiday services at the Peretz Centre, 6184 Ash Street.
On two Shabbatot each month we engage with our full davvening, Torah reading and dvar Torah discussion. In between, we have one Shabbat devoted to meditation and contemplation, and another to a program of discussion and learning. Shabbat services are from 10:00am-12:30pm, followed by a potluck kiddush lunch.

Spirit of Our Congregation

Ahavat Olam is not easily labelled. There are a number of ideals that attract us and bind us together as a congregation:

  • A sense of authentic spiritual experience in a Jewish context. This can take many different forms and always represents an honouring of our own spiritual truths as well as the collective experience of the Jewish people as taught through our religious tradition.
  • A sense of empowerment with our religious heritage. We strive for knowledge and understanding of the tradition. We believe that our religious tradition has always been dynamic and evolving. We have the responsibility to shape our religion so that it serves joy and compassion in this world in our times and the future.
  • Shared commitment to religiously motivated engagement with significant social justice issues. This can be called the prophetic side of Judaism and has many different ways of being lived.

Spiritual Leadership

Providing spiritual leadership to Ahavat Olam is Rabbi David Mivasair, who comes to us via the Brit Shalom congregation in State College, Pennsylvania, and the Or Shalom congregation in Vancouver.

Reb David is a progressive, open-minded rabbi with a gentle soul. He values equal rights for all, which is reflected in his commitment to furthering the beliefs he holds, such as peace in the Middle East, and the rights of gays and lesbians to marry. Reb David teaching
